My camera gear has evolved over the years to accommodate my growing butterfly photography obsession.
The earliest photos on the site were taken with a Nikon Coolpix E4300. I don’t seem to have a photo of just the camera itself, but here’s a photo of me holding it.
It was compact, and nothing fancy, but surprisingly, it got the job done taking butterfly photos.
Here’s some of my favorite shots taken with it. The Silvery Checkerspot on daisies at the bottom is the first photo of a butterfly I took, and the one that started this whole journey.

I updated to a Nikon D40x with the Nikkor 55-200mm lens. Followed by the Nikon D300s with Micro Nikkor 105mm lens, which I absolutely adored. Most of the shots on this sight are with those two set ups. I also have a Nikon D80 that I paired with a Nikkor 70-300mm lens. But at times, all of these combos have been shuffled around when convenience dictated. They served me very well from 2007 to 2023.

I have many, many photos taken with these cameras and lens that I love. But here are few more favorites.

Winter of 2024, I decided it was time to switch to mirrorless. After a lot of research I settled on the Canon EOS R7 with RF100mm F2.8 Macro.
I know there will be a bit of a learning curve, switching from Nikon to Canon, but I do think this will be a great combo for me.
2024 will be a bit of an adventure as I adjust, but so far, it has not dissappointed.
